Beach holiday travel tips

family-on-beach

The beach holiday is everyone’s dream break. The sun, sand and sparkling seas, the relaxation time and peace and quiet. The unwritten rule that you must use this time to chill out and just reconnect with yourself.Beach holidays are supposed to be easy and relaxed, but it can take a little bit of planning and preparation to get there. We have put together some beach holiday travel tips and advice to make the planning part stress free.

With our help, you can be on your relaxing holiday sooner, and in the right frame of mind from the beginning.

The Beachside Collective’s Easy and Relaxing list of Beach Holiday Travel Tips

Make a list

Some people LOVE being delegated the job of packing master, while others are more forced into the role kicking and screaming. Either way, packing needs to be done – and if you want it done right, you have to do it yourself – amiright?

Take a lesson from Santa on this one – make a list and check it twice. Make your list at least a few days before you need to pack to give you time to review it, add things you’ve forgotten, and go shopping for anything you are missing. Ideally, you make the list a week or two before you are leaving.

There is a great template list here

If you are flying

There will be some absolute essentials you need to take if you are flying somewhere, especially if you are travelling overseas. Things like sunscreen and thongs you can pick up anywhere, but these you must have packed in your bag to go:

  • Passports and ID
  • Copies of any tickets/reservations/transfers
  • Money/exchanged currency/credit cards
  • Any medication, ensuring that it is labelled
  • Contraception if needed

If you are travelling with a baby, check with your airline to see what items you can take on the plane – some will include these in the ticket price. Some will allow a baby carrier or stroller to be taken along with your regular luggage.

If you want to minimise the items you take with you, check with your accommodation about the ability to borrow or hire these things from your destination.family-at-airport

Put a beach bag together with the day trip essentials

And then leave that bag alone. Take things out to use them, wash them etc, then put them back ready for the next beach trip.

We particularly love the Grey Wolf bag from Cub and Scout; it looks good, is sturdy and easy to clean, has heaps of space and pockets, and even stands up on its own when you need it to.

In this bag you may want to put:

  • Sunscreen
  • Antibacterial wipes
  • Hand sanitiser
  • A small first aid kit
  • Snacks that travel well (pretzels, muesli bars, rice crackers)
  • A couple of bottles of water
  • A couple of snap-lock bags to keep sand out of any valuables
  • A hat for every person in your family
  • Sunglasses
  • Floaties for anyone who needs them
  • A rug or beach blanket
  • Change of underwear or nappies for any little ones not yet toilet trained

This way you don’t have to keep repacking the beach bag and stressing about what is in it every time you go.

The fun stuff list

Your beach holiday is supposed to be fun and relaxing – right? Being well prepared is part of that, as is bringing a few comforts of home. Just because you are on the beach doesn’t mean you want to be uncomfortable, overheated or get sand in weird places.

Time to think of fun, comfort and luxury for this list – you are going on a well-deserved break after all.

Toys

  • Bucket and spade if you have little ones
  • Goggles
  • Things that sink and float for various water games such as sinkies, balls or frisbees.
  • Boogie boards or pool noodles

Comfort

Think of an Italian beachside in a vintage movie – and go classic and classy with your shade options. We love the unique prints on umbrellas like this Cool Cat print from Camilla, or you may also like the quirky shape of the gorgeous beach tent range from Lovin Summer.

We adore this innovative Sand Pillow as an easy beach seat. It is lightweight and folds up small when empty, but when you are at the beach fill the base with sand and the headrest insert with air, and you have an instant seat. Then just empty it again and fold up to go home.

Safety

Always swim in patrolled areas. Keep an eye on anyone who is not a strong swimmer and closely supervise your children.

Make sure everyone stays hydrated and protected from the sun especially in the hottest parts of the day. Don’t overdo alcohol and swimming, and make sure that someone knows where you are.

If you are unsure, check with hotel staff about safe beach spots to go to.

Use sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a t-shirt or rashy, and have shade such as an umbrella or a spot under the trees. Reapply sunscreen every couple of hours.

Beach Holiday Travel Tips: Try not to overthink it

The best way to have a great beach holiday is to not overthink it.

If possible, try not to stress too hard about your beach holiday preparation. Unless you are on a desert island, almost anything you forget can be replaced – you don’t need to be so prepared that you have thought of everything.

Go with the flow a little bit and teach yourself to relax. If you have forgotten something, that is ok. The chilled out boho vibe is probably why you planned this holiday in the first place – so, take a deep breath and chill out.

And enjoy.

Hawaii Tips for Aussie Families

waimanalo-beach-hawaii-girl

Today we welcome Belinda Eather from Hawaii Tips for Aussie Families –  a great resource for those planning a holiday to the gorgeous Hawaiian Islands (my favourite place in the world!!).

Belinda shares her inspiration for starting her page, and also throws a few great travel tips our way.

Why did you start Handy Hawaii Tips for Aussie Families?

I started the page because I’ve become the ‘go to’ person amongst family, friends and work colleagues for Hawaii recommendations – they call me their travel agent haha. And questions on Facebook are always being asked about Hawaii, so just thought it’s time to share those recommendations in one spot. It’s also not just about Hawaii, it will be about other destinations I am familiar with like Fiji, Canada, America as I have travelled quite a lot and spent many hours researching anywhere I go.

I have been numerous times to Hawaii over the past few years, 4 times with small children. Travelling with kids is a different ball game and I have found some great accommodations, beaches, activities that the whole family will love and on a budget. I also hate seeing people waste money on things that aren’t necessary when there are good deals around, you just need to find them.

In particular, the accommodation side of things in Oahu is overwhelming, there is so much choice and varying prices, it can be very confusing. We are all so time poor these days, especially as parents, so if I can help out in any way it makes me happy.

Behind the Brand – Jack + Jules

Jack-and-jules

This week we catch up with lovely Jackie and Julie from Jack+Jules! These ladies create gorgeous yet functional lifestyle bags, with all of their designs inspired by the colours of the Australian landscape. Their Coastal Beach Bag has an in built sand release zip where you can shake out the sand without the bags contents - it is genius! Who doesn't love stylish and smart design! We hope you enjoy this edition of Behind the Brand.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself?

We’re two American women who met at our children’s primary school in Melbourne. We had both immigrated to Australia with Australia partners and, learning we had so much in common, developed a friendship from there.

2. Why did you start your business?

Julie- I was a practicing attorney in the US and I jumped at the opportunity to create something from scratch here that would allow me greater flexibility with my family.

Jackie- Prior to Jack+Jules, I worked for somebody else’s small business and it inspired me to start something that I could call my own. When we realised we had similar visions of our future, it made sense to collaborate.

3. Where do you get your inspiration?

Our first product was a line of reusable market bags- very practical and very convenient and on target in regard to our concerns about the environment. They are still one of our favourite products, but the process inspired us to continue with other functional bags that were also fun and vibrant, and all in tones of the Australian landscape.

Behind the Brand with Dock & Bay

We caught up with Ben, Bondi based co-creator of the world’s first quick drying lightweight beach towel.

Dock & Bay was hot on my hit list when I created Beachside Collective, not only are their towels stylish and chic (I mean stripes are simply timeless), but more importantly they are innovative and practical. This brand is going places and we hope you enjoy learning a bit about Ben and Andy, their inspiration, and some exciting things happening like their TV debut!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself?
We are Andy & Benno from Dock & Bay. We are mates who used to work together in London in the corporate world. Now, I (Ben) am back home in Sydney (Bondi, where else for a beach towel brand) and Andy is based in London.

2. Why did you start your business?
Working in the corporate world was great for passing time, making friends and learning a bunch of interesting skills. But there didn’t seem to much of a sense of purpose that I gained from it. There was always something inside me that wanted to break free and try some new ideas, do something different to make a living and maybe even use a successful business as a vehicle for making positive change in the world.

Beachside Comfort and Inspiration

There is a magic that seems to come alive at the beach.  The gentle ebb and flow of the waves at the water’s edge and sway of the palms ignites a mystical enchantment that fills those who allow it with a sense of purpose.  Others may feel relaxed or a sense of comfort or be inspired.  The beachside seems to have a positive effect on all who experience it.  Whether it is a walk along the sandy shores, a swim in the ocean or just a chance to sit and enjoy the breeze, the reassuring comfort that you can feel is wonderful.
